Using fancy text on Steam (and the limit nobody mentions)

  • Profile name: ✅ accepts most Unicode letters and symbols.
  • Custom URL (vanity ID): ❌ only plain letters, numbers and dashes — no fancy text.

The real catch: Steam limits your name to 32 bytes, not 32 characters. Fancy Unicode letters use about 4 bytes each, so a fully-styled name gets cut off after roughly 7–8 characters. For a longer name, style just one word and keep the rest plain.

Why does my Steam name get cut off?

Steam caps names at 32 bytes, and each fancy Unicode letter is about 4 bytes, so styled names run out of room after ~7–8 characters. Style one word and keep the rest plain for a longer name.

Can I put a fancy font in my Steam URL?

No — the custom URL only allows plain letters, numbers and dashes. The fancy text goes in your profile name.
